Background
The Mission was carrying $3.5 million in debt from the accelerated construction of a veterans’ shelter following a devastating fire in 2015. The debt constrained the organization’s ability to pursue its broader vision—including a desperately needed shelter for women and children—and weighed heavily on board and staff leadership.
Vision
DickersonBakker helped the Mission turn that vision into a strategic, achievable path forward—first by addressing the immediate debt burden, then by building toward the long-awaited new shelter.
Challenges
• $3.5 million in debt that limited its ability to invest in future ministry and programs.
• A history of unsuccessful campaign efforts, having previously worked with at least three other firms without achieving their objectives.
• Leadership fatigue and diminished confidence after years of stalled fundraising efforts.
• A critical unmet need for a Women & Children’s Shelter.
• The COVID-19 pandemic, which interrupted the initial campaign shortly after launch.
The Mission needed more than a fundraising strategy. It needed a path that could restore confidence, reengage donors and leadership, and create momentum for the future.
The Plan
With the debt eliminated, the Mission was positioned to move forward. Additional funds raised through the campaign supported a feasibility study and architectural planning for the new Women & Children’s Shelter. Building on that success, the Mission partnered with DickersonBakker again in 2023 to develop and execute a $7 million campaign to construct the new shelter.
The Campaign
In 2023, the Mission and DickersonBakker partnered again on a $7 million campaign for a new Women & Children’s Shelter. That campaign was also completed successfully, culminating in the grand opening of the long-awaited facility in 2025.
Together, the Washington City Mission campaigns demonstrate how strategic counsel, disciplined execution, and faith-based partnership can turn adversity into long-term organizational strength—and turn a stalled vision into a completed mission.
Outcomes
100% Debt Elimination: The Mission completely eliminated its $3.5 million debt, removing a major barrier to future growth.
$7 Million Raised for the Women & Children’s Shelter. A second successful campaign provided the resources needed to construct the new shelter, which opened in 2025. The completion of the Women & Children’s Shelter addressed one of the region’s most pressing needs, expanding the Mission’s capacity to serve vulnerable women and children and transforming lives for years to come.
Restored Confidence and Momentum: After years of stalled efforts, the Mission regained credibility and confidence among donors, community partners, and board members.
Strengthened Leadership and Governance: The campaign process reinvigorated board engagement and aligned leadership around a clear, shared vision for future growth.
Deepened Donor Relationships: Through strategic counsel and intentional communication, major donors reconnected with the Mission’s purpose, while generosity flourished across the donor base.
